That's cool, Jake. In the summer of 1966 the Statlers opened for Johnny Cash at the old Amarillo Municipal Auditorium. I was on TDY at the Amarillo air base and a buddy and I went to see it. I think it cost $2.50 or $3.
Also, I was looking on one of the links and noticed that in 1958 (the first year in enrolled in Sam Houston), the number 8 song in the nation for the entire year was "Sugartime" by the McGuire Sisters.
That song was co-written by Charlie Phillips, who has lived in Amarillo for decades. In the '60s and '70s he and his band "The Sugartimers" played regularly at either the old Aviatrix Club or the old Avalon Ballroom on East Amarillo Boulevard. I can't remember which one.
I understand Charlie is still in Amarillo, but I don't know if he still has the band together.
Take care.
